Officials find 38 million illegal cigarettes
Wednesday 22 July 2009
Finance ministry investigators seized 38 million illegal cigarettes in a warehouse in Breda last week, their biggest ever seizure, the the ministry confirmed on Wednesday.
The cigarettes were probably destined for the British market and would have been smuggled in smaller batches, the ministry said. Dutch, British and Belgian officials were involved in the investigation.
No arrests have been made in the Netherlands, the ministry said.
The haul brings the total number of illegal cigarettes found in the Netherlands so far this year to 144 million.
