Nato chief hospitalised after stroke

Wednesday 22 July 2009

Nato’s outgoing secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was treated for a blood clot after being taken ill during Belgian national day festivities on Tuesday, according to a Nato statement.

The former Dutch foreign minister is recovering in hospital after having 'a small blood clot' removed, the statement said.

De Hoop Scheffer, 61, will remain in hospital for a few days and is expected to make a full recovery the statement said. He has been on a whirlwind tour across European capitals in recent days to say his goodbyes.

However, Nos tv reports that De Hoop Scheffer had a heart attack and is currently in intensive care. His condition is stable, the broadcaster says.
