Iceland delays Icesave vote

Friday 24 July 2009

The Icelandic parliament has delayed voting on a deal to repay €1.3bn to the Netherlands which it used to compensate Dutch savers who lost money when internet bank Icesave collapsed, news agency ANP reports on Friday.

The vote should have taken place on Thursday night but has been postponed to the beginning of August. Iceland also owes Britain €2.7bn in a similar compensation package.

A number of MPs have doubts about the deal and the vote is expected to be very tight.

The Netherlands has warned Iceland its bid to join the European Union could be hurt if the deal is not voted through.

This sounds like extortion.

They should pay it immediately;
it´s only 13.333 euros per capita.

Plus interest of course.

Pay up or perish!

dear all,

The question is not if Iceland wants to pay, it is a question how much we can pay and should. Even if the dutch and the UK governments threat Iceland or try to blackmail by trying to block Iceland out of E.U and even worse blocking all investments funding and loans to the starving Icelandic economy, it will not help. Driving Iceland bankrupt because of some stupid internet bank that went bankrupt will definetly not help either. I think the E.U should have helped Iceland through it difficulties rather than trying to sink it, than this had been a complete different story for all.
Yes Icelandic government shears the most responsibility of how things went, the banking system was to big but WHY did people still invest in it? WHY?
And i think the general public in iceland hurts the most that the money was most likely routed throug UK tax-paradises and probably still is there..
The majority of us we want to pay, but how much can we pay needs to be taken into account.

with greetings from Iceland

I´m from Iceland and this 'deal' is that I and the rest of the Icelandic nation will pay of a loan from the Dutch and Brits. Basically, I´m supposed to pay the debts of lowlife scums that ran a PRIVATELY OWNED bank to the ground. Does that sound right to you? It doesn´t to me. No one in Iceland has ever said that the Dutch and Charlies will not be compensated. We want a better deal, which doesn´t require me to pay other peoples debt. Also, the Dutch and British governments are also to blame in this case.
