Swimming teacher faces rape charges
Friday 19 June 2009
The 59-year-old swimming teacher arrested earlier this week for indecently assaulting and photographing almost 100 girls, will also face rape charges, news agency ANP reports on Friday.
The charge has been added as a precaution, a public prosecution department official told ANP.
So far there is no evidence the man actually raped children but nothing could be ruled out at this moment, the official said.
Rape charges allow officials to keep the man in custody longer and it is also difficult to add rape to the charge sheet at a later date, ANP said.

Ah, so now he's charged with "raping" as well as "indecently assaulting and photographing" "almost 100" girls. He's been a very busy boy indeed!
Now that we have a round number ("almost 100" instead of the previous "98"), should we concluded that this could mean plus or minus 50?
"Rape charges allow officials to keep the man in custody longer" and spare them other possible "difficulties" in future.
That makes sense - who needs evidence to destroy a man's reputation? After all, the reputation of Dutch police is protected by law, so THEY have nothing to fear from making false or reckless accusations.
But why not charge the accused with kidnapping and murder as well? After all, his life as a social being is already effectively ended by this public denunciation. In jail or prison he will have to be kept in solitary confinement to avoid lynching, and if acquitted by the courts, he will be shadowed by these charges and shunned for the rest of his life.
