Crown witness will appear at gangland trial

Thursday 04 June 2009

The key witness in a gangland murder trial has agreed to give evidence in court after settling his differences with the public prosecution department, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

Former gang member Peter la Serpe had pulled out of the trial, saying that not enough was being done to ensure his safety.

Eleven men and women are on trial for their role in a number of gangland killings.

The public prosecutor had agreed to cut La Serpe's own sentence in half in return for his testimony. He is accused of murdering property tycoon Kees Houtman and preparing other contract killings.

TV programme Nova reported on Tuesday that La Serpe will get over €1m to pay for his security after the trial.
