Taxi fares 25% cheaper in 2008

Wednesday 11 March 2009

The average city taxi fare went down by 25% to €13.48 over the past year according to figures commissioned by the transport ministry, reports Wednesday’s AD newspaper.

Since February last year taxi fares have been based on kilometres travelled rather than the duration of a journey. But one third of taxi firms claim their income has fallen as a result of the new tariff system introduced by the government, says the AD.

Although the total turnover of taxi companies was stable at €300m last year, 150 new firms joined the sector, the paper says.

MPs are due to discuss the situation on Wednesday.

Maybe someone should tell the taxi drivers of Amsterdam. On any given evening they refuse to take you anywhere for less than 20 euro, no matter what the distance. This practice may be illegal, but it doesn't stop them. They are a law unto themselves.
