Guerrilla Games needs more power

Thursday 05 February 2009

Guerrilla Games, the leading computer games developer in the Netherlands, is being forced to leave its Amsterdam city centre office because the building cannot provide it with enough electricity, the Parool reports on Thursday.

To get in the extra electricity it needs, the company needs to make a slight alteration to the front of its Herengracht office. But the listed buildings commission has so far refused to give the green light to do this.

Sony-owned Guerrilla Games employs 140 people and makes games for the Playstation 3.

'We are not the sort of company to go and work on an industrial estate,' says director Hermen Hulst. 'We've got 20 nationalities working for us. People who opted for us and also for Amsterdam. They would not be here if we were based in Hengelo.'

Meanwhile, the Parool also reports that Amsterdam's HBO college is starting a new four-year course for would-be computer game developers.

Guy Melis of game developer W! Games tells the paper that the sector is always in need of new people because it is a growth market. 'Dutch makers of games do not compete with each other apart from on the jobs market,' he says.
