Dutch soldier killed in Afghanistan
Monday 08 September 2008
A Dutch soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan on Sunday afternoon, bringing the total number of Dutch military deaths in the country to 17.
Jos ten Brinke (21) was taking part in an armoured car patrol when the bomb went off. Five other soldiers were injured. One is said to be ‘critical but stable’.
The attack comes after a relatively quiet period for Dutch troops in which there has been little fighting and ‘room to make advances’, armed forces chief Peter van Uhm told reporters.
The Netherlands has some 1,700 troops in Afghanistan, concentrated in the southern region of Uruzgan. The country joined the NATO mission in July 2006.
