Up to half the food bought is not eaten

Monday 14 July 2008

Between one third and 50% of the food bought in the Netherlands is wasted, according to the agriculture economic institute LEI in Saturday’s Parool.

Every year consumers throw some €600m worth of uneaten food away, supermarkets and the catering industry throw out food to the value of €640m and producers dump food valued at €300m, LEI says.

It wants the issue of wasted food to be placed on the political agenda.

This is a sin! Portion control needs to be instilled in everyone's mind. I know I try and still there is some waste, but 50% is an amzing figure.

When restaurant portions are too big, people should take leftovers home. I rarely see this happen in the Netherlands.

This is something really sad, considering there are people in some other part of the world that are dying for the lack of food. I think one of the reason for this is the food packaging strategy in grocery shops like AH. Why does everything has to be so packaged?. People buy too much what they don't need or eat.

Truely a sin, I wish we could waste less and send that to the places on the world which they need the food, Because they won't waste their food!

May be less of adverises about food... & teaching kids at an early to eat what they need only would help a lot! If we also had less packages & bought only what we need & get served the portion we like in a restauarant is also good if we are asked!!!

Yes! All very true! I've been asking @ AH where their waste food goes to and have been told it gets recycled as animal food.
I feel it should be distributed to Charities and feeding the poor, the needy, and the homeless of Holland first, and then what's left to feeding animals.
