Up to half the food bought is not eatenMonday 14 July 2008 Between one third and 50% of the food bought in the Netherlands is wasted, according to the agriculture economic institute LEI in Saturday’s Parool. Every year consumers throw some €600m worth of uneaten food away, supermarkets and the catering industry throw out food to the value of €640m and producers dump food valued at €300m, LEI says. I rarely see this happen in the Netherlands. I think one of the reason for this is the food packaging strategy in grocery shops like AH. Why does everything has to be so packaged?. People buy too much what they don't need or eat. This is a sin! Portion control needs to be instilled in everyone's mind. I know I try and still there is some waste, but 50% is an amzing figure.
