Pro and anti-chicken lobby fight it out

The Dutch meat board PPE is demanding animal welfare lobby group Wakker Dier stops using an advertising slogan based on its own popular radio jingle for chicken.
Wakker Dier is using the slogan ‘chicken, the most abused piece of meat’ to draw attention to the conditions poultry is kept under on factory farms. But the PPE says the slogan and music is too similar to its own slogan ‘chicken, the most versatile piece of meat’, which it has used since 1979.
In turn, the animal welfare group has made its own complaint against the PPE. It says the board is misusing a €3m grant from the European Commission to provide information about animal welfare and food safety. The board is using the cash to promote chicken recipes, the lobby group says.
