Amsterdam hopes to buy 12 more buildings
Friday 11 July 2008
Property company Stadsgoed, which works closely with the city council, is negotiating the purchase of 12 buildings along the Damrak in the city centre, news agency ANP reports on Friday, quoting the Telegraaf.
The deal is part of a campaign by the city to 'spruce up' the centre and weed out people with suspected criminal connections.
The buildings' owner, Asaf Barazani, has numerous budget hotels and souvenir shops in the vicinity of Amsterdam's central station.
Stadsgoed has already bought dozens of buildings in the red light district.
