Teenagers set to trap shops on beer sales

Thursday 22 May 2008

The government is considering getting young teenagers to try to buy alcohol in shops where they suspect the law is being broken, the AD reports on Thursday.

The paper says inspectors find it very difficult at the moment to take action against shops which are selling beer and other alcoholic drinks to the under-16s.

I'm sure that's called aiding & abetting in other countries & is an equally punishable offence! Instead the age limit on alcohol should be raised in line with other European countries...

So the police are going to ask teenagers to attempt to break the law so they can "take action" against shops who sell alcohol to minors. What happens to the teenagers who break the law and obtain alcohol? So to try to catch people who break the law the police is going to ask people to try to break the law. Prima.

Doesn't the police have other "more serious" things to go after? If a 15 year old one wants to get alcohol, he or she will find a way to get it..

Tim Lee.. the assholes in the US do it all the time. They call it protecting the youth. What it really is... a waste of time and entrapment.. I hate living in the US .. but it does not look any better in the netherlands..

Mark - You are correct. Entrapment is entrapment, no matter where it's practiced. I don't support it in any country. When the police have to become or create criminals to catch criminals, that is just wrong. Having grown up in the US and having lived in Holland for three years, it would be great to combine the good things about both countries and discard the bad things.

I hope that the bitter remark made by Mark, is not translated into a thought that America is a police state. Rest assured, Mark can leave anytime he wants to, unless of course he is somewhere in jail for having sold liquor to minors, or some other infraction of the law. In that case, we have the ACLU who might be able to assist him. May I suggest to Mark, get a life, go fishing, and listen to what Tim Lee is suggesting. That is what we call constructive criticism.
By staying in the US, you are only punishing yourself. In any case, Good Luck.
