Blasphemy law up for debate
Thursday 13 March 2008
A parliamentary majority wants to see the offence of blasphemy removed from the statute book. The two Christian the coalition parties want the legislation to remain but the third partner, Labour, says it is 'superfluous' and can be scrapped, Labour MP Ton Heerts said in a tv interview on Wednesday night.
There have been repeated calls for the law of blasphemy to be scrapped. A move three years ago was opposed by Labour which was not part of the government at the time. And in October it was thrown out by the current cabinet.
Parliament are due to debate the issue later on Thursday.
