Ajax football club suspends director
Monday 03 March 2008
Amsterdam football club Ajax said on Sunday that it has suspended its managing director Maarten Fontein pending dismissal.
Fontein was heavily criticised in a recent report on the Amsterdam football club's management. He has refused to resign voluntarily according to club sources quoted in Dutch media.
The report pointed to serious management failings. The club had wasted money on setting up talent schemes in foreign countries, had made poor purchases on the transfer market and had failed miserably in European competitions.
Despite netting Ajax a lucrative new sponsorship contract, Fontein was criticised for a lack of charisma and passion for football.
