One year on, coalition support slumps

Monday 18 February 2008

Support for the three-party government coalition has sunk to its lowest since the current cabinet was appointed one year ago according to a Maurice de Hond poll published at the weekend.

The Christian Democrats, Labour and ChristenUnie (CU) parties would lose 21 of their combined 80 seats in the 150-member parliament if an election was held today, the poll concluded.

According to the poll, the new Trots op Nederland (TON) nationalist movement set up by the controversial ex-Liberal hardliner Rita Verdonk would win 17 seats if an election was held now. Verdonk is currently an independent MP.

Of the three coalition parties only the small CU saw its popularity rise - up one seat to seven.
