No more pensions for prisoners

Friday 08 February 2008

People in prison should no longer be eligible for state pensions once they reach the age of 65, according to junior justice minister Nebahat Albayrak, reports RTL news.

The broadcaster says Albayrak plans to stop all benefits to prisoners once they are detained.

This is s great idea. As old criminals pay back their debt to society (running out of time, so to speak), deprive them of their pension rights. Then, when they come out of gaol, instead of watching them beg on the streets, why not cast them into a ready-made pit, cover them with lime and forget 'em, as befits an advanced civilisation?

I cant belive you comment.

A criminal is still a person and no one should be treated in such a manner. Rehabilation and counsling are the best methods of dealing with criminals.

I don't exactly understand the penal system in this country, but I do know that if a criminal has viable means of support there would be less need for them to commit crime just to support themselves.

I don't know if revoking pension is the right thing to do, but I think it deserves a lot more thought about the consequences.

Obviously, then, a person will have to qualify for a pension based, not on how old he/she is, but on how good he/she has been. Hmmmm...for equality's sake, every pension applicant should have to pass the same behavior test. That could save the country billions of euros.

Seriously, the idea of putting a criminal in jail is to have him repay his debt to society. Once the door slams, he's doing just that. To also impose the loss of his pension means you have forced his family to also repay his debt..totally unbelievable...and inhumane.
