CO2 targets must be realistic: Shell boss
Thursday 03 January 2008
European Union targets for reducing CO2 emissions must be realistic or they will turn people off, says Shell CEO Jeroen van der Veer in an interview with Thursday's Financieele Dagblad.
'The targets must be achievable, because overstretched targets can have a demotivating effect and people will lose interest,' Van der Veer said.
The EU wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% in 2020 compared with 2010.
Van der Veer said he was 'not pessimistic' that such a target could be reached if technological developments were positive.
But he warned against Dutch and German suggestions that the percentages might 'escalate' to 30% and 40%.

"...people will lose interest" in emissions targets that are overstretched writes Big Oilman Van de Veer. Who is he talking about? Ordinary people? Asthma sufferers and others whose lives are blighted by pollution? Or is he talking about other Big Oilmen, who might have to become a little more imaginative, even as profits from the sale of petroleum products go through the roof? Do senior executives actually get paid for being disingenuous?
