Same crime, different treatment

Tuesday 06 November 2007

Young people who are suspected of committing a crime are more twice as likely to end up in court if they are a member of an ethnic minority than if they are white, according to Utrecht university researcher Don Weenink.

Weenink analysed 409 criminal records and found that minority youths were 2.3 times more likely to be tried for committing the same crime as a white Dutch national.

Weenink told the Volkskrant social workers, who make recommendations about whether or not to prosecute, possibly find it easier to relate to native Dutch delinquents.
