PSV thrown out of KNVB cup
Thursday 27 September 2007
Dutch football’s governing body, the KNVB has disqualified the current national champion PSV from taking part in the Dutch cup.
The Eindhoven team included Manuel da Costa in its match against Heerenveen reserves on Wednesday although the Portuguese defender was still under a playing ban from the last season.
Because PSV have broken KNVB regulations, their 3-0 victory over Heerenveen is automatically invalid. This means they have officially lost the game and so will not go through to the next round.
An enormous blunder,’ is how PSV director Jan Reker describes the situation on the club’s website. ‘The KNVB cup is a great prize which PSV really wanted to win,’ he adds.
Reker says administrative procedures at the club will be dramatically changed to avoid similar mistakes happening in the future.
