Labour dissidents call for left shift

Wednesday 22 August 2007

A group of around 25 prominent Labour (PvdA) supporters will attempt to steer the party into a more left-wing direction at its October conference, the Volkskrant reports on Wednesday.

The initiative is led by Jacques Monasch who says the group will submit two motions to the conference. One will call for a clear commitment not to relax redundancy laws, the introduction of an extra tax on top salaries and a referendum on the new EU treaty.

The other will call for a 'fundamental change' in the party's organisation to give ordinary members more say. Monasch claims there is very little room for dissidents in the current set-up. 'The Labour website is full of propaganda from the top,' he told the Volkskrant.

The names of those behind the initiative will be unveiled on Thursday, the paper says. The Labour party has some 62,000 members.
