TV guide monopoly to end
Thursday 14 June 2007
Parliament has voted by a narrow margin to force all public broadcasters to make their programme scheduling information available to anyone, thereby ending the broadcasters’ monopoly on TV guides.
The Labour party (PvdA) and miniority party Partij voor de Dieren voted for the proposal put forward by D66 and VVD, but said the public broadcasters should receive compensation for the change, since the stations would lose members, and therefore income.
Subscription to TV guides published by broadcasters brings automatic membership of that broadcasting organisation.
Currently, the only non-public entity to be allowed access to scheduling data is the TV station Veronica.
