'Pig apartments' set to dominate Brabant
Tuesday 29 May 2007
Brabant farmers have submitted planning applications to build several enormous complexes for factory farming pigs, reports the Volkskrant on Tuesday.
The plans involve the building of two huge barns in Marle with room for 19,000 pigs in each.
The barns will be 10 metres high and 145 metres long. The animals will be kept on two floors - giving the complexes the nickname of 'pig appartments'.
Two other locations in Twenterand are also up for consideration. Local people are up in arms.
