Amsterdam mayor calls for national service

Amsterdam’s mayor Job Cohen called for the reintroduction of national service (dienstplicht) and fast track powers to intervene in problem families in an interview in Thursday’s edition of De Telegraaf..

Care agencies are too worried about the rights of the individual and too little about the social problems they cause, he said, which was slowing down the whole process of dealing with problem youth.
The Netherlands abolished national service in 1997.
