A Dictionary of DutchnessNatuurmonumentenThe Dutch society for the preservation of nature (Natuurmonumenten) was founded in 1905 to stop Amsterdam turning the Naardermeer lake into a rubbish dump. The lake, now under threat from road construction, was its first purchase. Today, the organisation has a membership of over 900,000 and manages 95,000 hectares of land spread over 370 reserves. Its aim is to preserve nature, the landscape and related cultural heritage. |
