In total, 578 people died in traffic accidents in the Netherlands in 2022, the highest total in years, the Telegraaf reported on Tuesday.

In addition, the number of accidents in which at least one person was injured rose by 3,500 to almost 21,500, the paper said.

The figures come from the Star reporting system, compiled by the police, local government and road users organisation ANWB.

Dutch News has contacted Star to find out how it defines a traffic accident death.

The organisation put the total number of traffic deaths in 2021 at 491, but national statistics agency CBS had a far higher total of 582. The CBS figure, for example, includes 43 pedestrians.

The cabinet has a target of halving the number of traffic-related deaths by 2030.
