200 tarantulas found in suitcase at Schiphol

Customs officers at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport have seized a suitcase containing 200 live tarantula spiders, website nu.nl reported on Wednesday.

Nu.nl said the spiders had been collected by a German couple who had been visiting Peru. They also brought back dozens of centipedes, crickets, grasshoppers and beetles.
The couple had put the insects in plastic boxes and hidden them among their clothing. Many of the tarantulas were a rare variety, nu.nl said.
The insects have been confiscated but the report makes no mention of what charges, if any, the couple may face.
