Senate turns down Iraq enquiry

The upper house (senate) will not hold an enquiry into Dutch support for the US invasion of Iraq, despite a petition with 130,000 signatures calling for an investigation, reports today’s Volkskrant.

The decision emerged during a senate debate on Monday night on the future deployment of Dutch soldiers. The left-wing opposition are in favour of an enquiry into how the decision was made for Dutch support for America’s invasion of Iraq. But they realise there is no majority in the senate for an enquiry, despite possible support from the government coalition Labour party.
The petition was organised by a citizens’ group called Openness On Iraq ahead of the senate debate which will continue on Tuesday. All the cabinets led by current prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende and a majority in the second chamber see no reason for a parliamentary enquiry.
