CDA takes lead over Labour

The Christian Democrats (CDA) are one seat ahead of Labour (PvdA) in the latest Maurice de Hond poll. It is the first time since April 2003 that the CDA has overtaken Labour in a De Hond poll.

The poll gives CDA 44 seats, Labour 43 and the Liberals (VVD) 27, meaning that the current CDA/VVD coalition would not have a majority in the 150-seat parliament.
With just over six weeks before the election on November 22, the political horse-trading has already begun. VVD leader Mark Rutte said on Saturday that his party would only form a coalition with the CDA. The right was full of ‘unstable splinter parties’ and an alliance with the left was out of the question, he said. Another potential partner, religious party ChristenUnie, could no longer be considered right-wing because it had voted against VVD immigration minister Rita Verdonk three times, said Rutte.
ÉénNL (One NL) became the latest of the new right-wing groups to publish its manifesto today. As well as tightening immigration, the party wants to abolish the upper house of parliament (Senate) and stop subsidies to religious and ethnic organisations.
