Further consolidation: Jumbo and Coop supermarket groups buy rival Emté
Supermarket chains Jumbo and Coop are jointly buying sector rival Emté from wholesaler Sligro Food Group. The transaction is valued at €410m, online news service Nu.nl reported on Monday.
The deal includes 130 Emté supermarkets, distribution centres in Kapelle and Putten, meat processor Vleescentrale in Enschedé, back office operations and company headquarters in Veghel. Emté posted turnover of €828m in 2017. The company has a 2.5% share of the market.
Emté has a payroll of 6,200, representing 2,700 FTEs. All employees will be retained by the new owners.
Two-thirds of Emté’s activities will ultimately be integrated into Jumbo, which is the country’s second-largest supermarket group behind Albert Heijn. The remaining third will go to Coop.
Sligro is also the main supplier for Jumbo’s La Place restaurant chain which it acquired from the assets of bankrupt department store V&D.
The transaction must win the approval of competition watchdog ACM. If all goes to plan, the deal will be completed this year.
