Arrests as English football fans flock to Amsterdam red light district

March 23, 2018

Amsterdam police have suspended the ban on public drinking in the city’s red light district because so many drunken English football fans are in the area that the ban can no longer be enforced, local broadcaster AT5 said on Friday.

Yesterday, 25 England fans were arrested after riot police were brought in to break up the mass of people. By early afternoon on Friday there had been one arrest, but police say there have been several fights and some fans are looking for trouble.

One video on Twitter shows England supports throwing beer at an open boat and tipping a bike, complete with child seat, into the canal.

England take on the Netherlands in a football friendly at the Johan Cruijff football stadium in the south east of the city on Friday evening.
