Rude awakening for Rotterdammers as burst water main floods street

Residents in a Rotterdam square were woken early by police on Monday morning after a burst water main flooded the street outside.

People living on Robert Kochplaats were urged to move their cars away from the street as the water level rose. The cause of the breach is being investigated, but water supplier Evides said it was not thought to be the result of vandalism.

A spokesman told RTV Rijnmond that the water supply to surrounding flats was not cut off and the leak had now been repaired. ‘Fortunately the flats have a double connection, so we were able to shut off the water supply and carry out the repairs without residents being affected.’
