Noah and Emma top the list of most popular Dutch baby names

Noah and Emma were the most popular names for new babies in the Netherlands last year, overtaking the 2016 winners Daan and Anna, the social insurance bank SVB said on Friday.

In total, the Netherlands welcomed 635 Noahs and 755 Emmas among 170,000 new babies.

However, there were major regional differences, the SVB said. It compiles the ranking on the basis of applications for child benefits.

In Friesland Jesse and Lieke topped the list, while in Gelderland parents opted for Levi and Tess. In Zeeland, traditional names Jan and Johanna were most popular.

This year the SVB has opted to only publish names which were given at least 25 times, to avoid the annual focus on strange names, broadcaster NOS reported. These have included in the past such gems as Danley-Maikeljunior, Svastika, Shoe-Jainely, Divinepraise and Bentley-Maxim.

The top 10 names

1. Noah and Emma

2. Sem and Tess

3. Lucas and Sophie

4. Finn and Julia

5. Daan and Anna

6. Levi and Mila

7. Milan and Sara

8. Bram and Eva

9. Luuk and Zoe

10. Jesse and Evi
