This weekend will be windy with wintry showers, particularly in the north. And with temperatures set to be as low as freezing point inland, sleet or snow could stick in the northern provinces on Saturday morning, weather forecasters say.

It will remain cloudy nationwide and the showers will move southwards, bringing sleet and snow to the rest of the country. In Limburg, several centimetres of snow could fall, the KNMI weather bureau said.

Sunday will also be cloudy and wet, but the winds will die down.

It will remain cloudy next week, although temperatures will make a leap upwards on Monday.

The KNMI says the maximum temperature will be around 11 degrees but website Buienradar suggests it could reach as high as 13 degrees on Wednesday.

That would make January 24 the warmest ever. The previous record dates from 1960 when the temperature hit 12.1 degrees at the De Bilt weather station.

The warmer weather will continue into next weekend, the KNMI said in its long range forecast.
