Dutch smartphone payments ‘double’ in less than a year
Some 320,000 Dutch people have paid for goods using their smartphone, according to technology website Tweakers.
The report cites the Dutch Payments Association as the source for its figures. Several banks currently allow people to make payments with their Android telephones using NFC (near-field communication) technology. All payment terminals should allow contactless payments by mid-2019.
This is ‘one of the most cashless [payment landscapes] in Europe’, according to the European Payments Council.
Broadcaster NOS reports that the number of people who have uploaded and used banking apps has doubled since the beginning of 2017. iPhones have similar technology, but use the Apple Pay system, which is not currently supported by payment terminals in the Netherlands.
A spokesman for the Dutch Payments Association confirmed the figures to DutchNews.nl.
