MPs call on new tax minister to halt Wadden Sea ferry price hikes

MPs from across the political spectrum have called on junior finance minister Menno Snel to do his utmost to stop an increase in ticket prices for Wadden Sea crossings.

The national tax plan for 2018 includes a commitment to impose 21% value added tax on ferry purchases, fuel and repairs to meet European Commission rules.

According to Brussels, the tax break which the ferry companies have enjoyed until now is only for commercial ships sailing outside the 12 mile zone – and that does not include the Wadden Sea.

MPs are concerned that ferry firms will pass the extra cost on to passengers and that this will have an impact on islanders who rely on the ferries to reach the mainland.

Snel will report back to MPs next week.
