More pizza? Food home delivery sales in the Netherlands to hit €1.3bn

October 25, 2017

The combined sales of  restaurant home delivery services in the Netherlands will reach between €1.3 bn and €1.4bn this year, according to a study by ABN Amro published on Wednesday.

The bank’s economists expect sector revenues to rise by another 20% in 2018, the agency said. Buoyant economic prospects, plus the online presence of the restaurants involved and the ease of ordering and payment add to the appeal.

In the second quarter of 2017, combined turnover of deliver firms such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats reached €440.5m. Consumers paid an average €11.40 for the 38.6 million meals delivered in the three-month period.

Pizza  was the most popular meal with sales totalling €93m. Grilled meals followed in second place with sales of some €77m while fast food made up the top three with turnover of €60m.

Despite the overall growth, only 35% of the meals were ordered online and most consumers continue to place their orders by phone.

Despite the turnover growth, competition in the sector is tough and delivery firms need to be big to become profitable, the ABN Amro report said.
