People flying off on holiday from Eindhoven and Rotterdam airports could face delays this weekend if they are heading for non-Schengen destinations because industrial action by military police could lead to long passport controls.

The military police, who control the Netherlands’ borders, are campaigning for a better pay and conditions deal and say they will be checking all passports extra thoroughly this weekend.

Talks on a new pay deal have been deadlocked since April and a large majority of union members have rejected what the government said is its final offer.

Schiphol airport, where people had to wait several hours to clear passport control earlier in the year, is not affected, broadcaster RTL said.

Rotterdam airport is warning passengers to allow an extra 30 minutes to make sure they don’t miss their flight.
