The Netherlands trails UN targets on climate change, women’s health

November 4, 2016

20150925-un-summit-01The Netherlands is not performing well enough in some aspects of the United Nations sustainable development targets, the national statistics office CBS said on Friday.

The aim of the goals, agreed as global policy themes  in September 2015, is to create more prosperity, boost equality, combat climate change and stimulate peace and justice.

While the Netherlands performs well in terms of economic sustainability – it is the fifth ‘richest’ country in the EU and trust in institutions is high – the country is trailing in climate protection, renewable energy and economic and social inequality, the CBS said.

In particular, when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions and the use of sun and wind power, the Netherlands is almost bottom of the EU list – 25th and 26th place respectively.

The Netherlands also performs poorly in the ranking of women’s health, coming in 20th place out of 28, the CBS said. In terms of men’s health, the Netherlands is ranked 12th.
