Public prosecutor rejects damages claims against Wilders ahead of trial
The public prosecution department has rejected damages claims made by some 40 Dutch Moroccans against anti-Islam campaigner and MP Geert Wilders.
They are each demanding €500 from Wilders to compensate them for the hurt they felt after he led supporters in an anti-Moroccan chant after the last local elections.
The public prosecution department said the claimants had no legal right to damages and has told the court to reject the claims.
Formal hearings in Wilders’ trial on charges of discrimination and inciting hatred start next Monday.
The trial is expected to last three weeks and the calls for compensation will be made next Friday, lawyer Göran Sluiter said. The case is being heard at the heavily guarded court room at Schiphol airport.
