Most road, rail and bike journeys made in the evening rush hour are not commuters on their way home but people doing shopping, visiting friends or going out, the national statistics office CBS said on Wednesday.

While 77% of the 8.3 million journeys made during the morning rush hour are by people going to work or to school, just one third of the 9.7 million late afternoon trips were education or work-related, the CBS said.

One reason for the difference could be that evening commuters are more likely to stop off and do shopping or visit a friend after work, the CBS said.

The CBS research is based on data from 2014.
