Four out of 10 flights taking off from Dutch airports this summer were delayed, according to a website that processes compensation claims for passengers and quoted by broadcaster NOS.

The website, vlucht-vertraagd.nl, says some 81,000 people arrived at least three hours late at their destination, a rise of 30% on a year ago. Operational problems were the most common reason for the delay, followed by strikes, technical difficulties and bad weather.

Spanish budget airline Veuling had the worst record. Almost four in 10 of its flights were delayed. EasyJet and Corendon flights were late one third of the time. Dutch flag carrier KLM flights were late in 13% of cases.

Under EU rules, passengers are entitled to compensation if a flight is delayed by more than three hours.
