Dutch worried about growing divergence in society

Mainstreet of Wijk bij DuurstedeThe Dutch are worried about the growing divergence between rich and poor and Muslim and non-Muslim, broadcaster NOS said on Tuesday.

A survey by research group Ipsos found that 73% of people think the gulf between Muslims and non-Muslims has increased in the past few years. In addition, around seven people in 10 consider the gap between the rich and poor and between native Dutch and immigrant has widened.

Almost everyone – over 90% – who believes there is a widening gap between different parts of society sees it as a problem, Ipsos said.

NOS commissions a major report on attitudes in Dutch society to coincide with the budget every year.

The report also shows six in 10 people have not noticed the economic recovery and 40% still plan to cut their spending this year. In addition, 61% do not believe that the economy will further improve in the coming year.
