Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport now offers more direct flights a week than any other airport in the world apart from Frankfurt, the Financieele Dagblad said on Monday.

The figures come from a report by Dutch economic institute SEO on behalf of the Airport Council International. The report, which is not yet available online, shows that Schiphol currently operates 4,633 flights a week, the FD said.

There have been fears that Dutch flag carrier KLM is being hit by the rise of budget airlines and state-backed competition from the likes of Turkish Airlines, Emirates and Etihad. This could, in turn, have an impact on Schiphol’s position as an important transfer airport, politicians say.

In addition, figures released last week show that Schiphol dealt with nearly 30 million passengers in the first six months of this year, a rise of 10% on the same period in 2015. The airport expects to deal with a record 63 million passengers this year.

Schiphol is 100% owned by national and local government.
