The Dutch driving licence authority CBR sent 10,300 people on a compulsory educational course last year after they were caught drunk driving.

This is a rise of around 1,300 on 2014, website Nu.nl reported.

The CBR said the increase is due to the decision to stop putting alcohol locks on the cars of people breaking the drink driving limit.

Last March, the high court ruled that compelling over the limit drivers to use an alcohol lock is ‘disproportionately’ severe because it does not take ‘personal circumstances’ sufficiently into account.

The courses, which people caught drunk driving have to pay for, focus on the impact of alcohol on driving and society.
