Government sets up €500K ‘rain fund’ for washed-out festivals

The government is to set aside €500,000 in subsidies to compensate outdoor festivals that are hit by summer rain.
Culture minister Jet Bussemaker said the ‘Bad Weather Fund’ was designed to ease the financial impact on festivals which have lost visitors or had to pay for extra safety measures. Organisers will have to repay the money when their financial situation improves.
Bussemaker told Nos Radio 1 Journaal that only festivals that already received subsidies would be eligible for the payouts. ‘These festivals have already suffered from budget cuts and have proved their artistic and social value,’ she said.
