Seven police officers earned more than their minister last year
Five senior police officers, a senior advisor to the force and the head of the police academy earned more than the legal maximum of €178,000 a year last year, the Volkskrant says on Wednesday.
Top earner was former Amsterdam police chief Bernard Welten who earned over €250,000, more than the chief of the national force and €75,000 more than the responsible minister, the paper says.
In addition, some 17 officials earned around €170,000.
In the Netherlands, most public sector officials face a salary ceiling equal to that of a minister – or €178,000 including pension and expenses.
The Volkskrant used freedom of information legislation to obtain the police pay details.
The paper points out that the force is struggling to cope with a €72m shortfall in its budget. In addition, last week a damning report was published about the failures and lack of professionalism among detectives.
