Employers’ organisation VNO-NCW says it is extremely disappointed that economic affairs minister Henk Kamp has decided not to support Rotterdam’s campaign to host the World Expo 2025.

‘It would have been a great opportunity for the Netherlands to show the world what we can do,’ spokeswoman Sigrid Verweij said on Monday. The employers’ organisation says hosting the event would be a boost for both jobs and the wider economy.

Kamp, however, said at the weekend that the advantages did not outweigh the costs and the impact on public safety, and that the cabinet did not endorse the bid.

The cabinet estimates hosting the Expo would cost between €500m and €1bn. ‘The event would require extra investment in infrastructure but the money is not there,’ Kamp said.
