Anne Frank’s book of fairy stories sells for €55,000 at New York auction

May 6, 2016

Anne_FrankA book of fairy stories that was owned by Anne Frank has been sold at auction in New York for €55,000, double the original estimate.

The book was sold in an auction held by the city’s Swann Auction Galleries. It is a German language version of the Grimm fairy tales, featuring Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. Anne has written her name and that of her sister on the first page.

The book was left behind when the family moved their possessions to the secret annex where they hid for most of the war.

The book was bought by the Museum of World War II near Boston. It is the first time in 20 years something that belonged to Frank has come up for sale.

Kenneth Rendell, the museum’s founder, told the New York Times the book would be a centerpiece of the museum’s Holocaust collection. This  includes material relating to other members of the Frank family, as well as what he called ‘very human pieces’ from others who had been in concentration camps.
