Competition authority to investigate KLM’s role at Schiphol

A KLM plane on the ground. The Dutch competition regulator ACM is carrying out an investigation into the position of flag carrier KLM at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, broadcaster Nos said on Monday.

The investigation follows complaints from other airlines that KLM’s dominance at Schiphol gives it an unfair advantage over its competitors.

KLM is largely owned by Air France but the Dutch government holds a minority stake.

‘It is of national importance that travellers have access to the rest of the world via Schiphol but this does not mean KLM is the only airline which should be doing this,’ a spokesman for the ACM told the broadcaster.

The ACM published its 2015 annual report on Monday and stated that its work last year saved consumers some €1.3bn – or €170 per household.

The organisation handed out fines totalling €24m and received 60,000 tips of possible abuses from consumers over the year.
