Tourist taxes are expected to generate €188.6m for Dutch local authorities this year, a rise of 8.6% on 2015, according to figures from the national statistics office CBS.

Amsterdam’s tourist tax income dwarves that of other local authorities. The capital receives over three times as many hotel bookings as Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht combined and the council expects to take in over €46m in tourist taxes this year. That will be a rise of 25% on last year’s earnings.

These predictions come as Amsterdam works on new investigation methods to ensure that private holiday rental platforms like airbnb.com pay their fair share of taxes and comply with city laws.

Amsterdam may bring in nearly a quarter of the country’s tourist tax income, but the tax is relatively more important elsewhere. The Wadden Sea island of Texel earns 30% of its income from tourist tax, and the island of Vieland earns 45%.
